GATEWAY CENTER

Located just outside of Boston, the Gateway Shopping Center is the largest urban retail development of a brownfield site in Massachusetts. The 90 acre redevelopment site was little more than a massive pile of earth — 650,000 cubic yards. The fill was used to build the site 6–12 feet above existing ground. A process called surcharging was used to build pads above a marker layer one foot below the existing grade. Geotechnical specialists were hired.
